Chapter 21
After several more months of this mutual torment, Callan finally reached his breaking point.
“Lila, do you hate me that much?” Callan erupted. “I’ve tortured myself into this half–human, half–ghost state, and you still won’t even look at me properly?”
“I’m not even asking for your forgiveness anymore–I just want one chance to make it up to you. Is that too much to ask?!”
However, faced with Callan’s hysterical outburst, Lila still only coldly replied with those same three words: “Let me go.”
“NEVER! ABSOLUTELY NEVER!” Callan was nearly driven insane by Lila’s cold attitude. Breathing heavily, he screamed with an almost bleeding voice: “Lila Carson, I told you–unless I’m dead, you’ll never escape from my side!”
So Lila shifted her gaze away, reverting to that expressionless doll who wouldn’t cry, wouldn’t laugh, wouldn’t speak.
Even with Callan right before her eyes, she remained coldly detached, shutting him out of her world completely.
She wouldn’t speak to him or spare him a glance!
Callan felt his heart bleeding. He grabbed Lila’s chin, forcing her to look at him: “Lila, is my death the only way you’ll forgive me?”
Lila coldly stared back at Callan. They had been torturing each other for over half a year, and Lila was exhausted.
If death could free her from Callan, she was willing to try.
So Lila smiled, staring intensely at Callan, then said coldly: “Callan, let’s play a game.”
This was the first time in months that Lila had smiled at Callan. He was momentarily stunned–at this point, he would lay down his life if she asked for it, let alone play a simple game.
‘Yes!” Callan eagerly agreed. “Lila, what game do you want to play? I’ll play anything you want.”
‘Let’s gamble with our lives,” Lila said softly. “Callan, I can’t forgive you, so I’ll leave the choice to fate.”
“We’ll play Russian roulette–six chambers, three bullets. We’ll take turns pointing the gun at each other’s heads.”
“If in the end neither of us dies, it means fate has forgiven you on my behalf, and I’ll follow fate’s will and forgive you one last time.”
“But if one of us dies, the game ends, and we’ll both be free.”

Chapter 21
At this, Callan immediately grasped Lila’s hand and passionately declared: “Lila, if you die, I’ll pull the trigger without hesitation to join you in the next world.”
However, this passionate declaration didn’t elicit the slightest emotion from Lila.
Lila maintained her cold expression: “Callan, if you die, I won’t follow you in death. I’ll completely forget you and live a good life!”
Callan’s heart ached again, but he said nothing, knowing he had long lost the right to ask Lila to die for him.
Russian roulette was extremely dangerous–six chambers, three bullets, the probability of death was nearly fifty
percent.
But Callan still agreed, knowing this might be his only chance for Lila’s forgiveness.
So Callan ordered his men to bring a gun.
“Lila, I love you. I can’t bear to see you risk having your head blown off in this gamble with me,” Callan said,
holding the gun. “So instead of taking turns, I’ll fire all three shots myself!”
“If I survive, it proves the entire universe wants you to forgive me. You can’t go against the universe’s will–you must forgive me.”
Hearing this, Lila lowered her eyes and softly replied: “Fine.”
But in her heart, she thought: If after three shots Callan is still lucky enough to be alive, I’ll grab the gun and blow
my own brains out.
Because now, she would rather die than stay with Callan!
Callan had no idea what Lila was thinking. He took a deep breath, picked up the Russian roulette revolver, and put
he barrel against his temple.
‘Lila, I love you,” Callan gazed into Lila’s beautiful eyes, smiling as he declared his love.
With these words, he pulled the trigger.
CLICK-
A loud sound–an empty chamber.
Callan’s face broke into a smile: “Lila, two more shots!”
“I believe my love for you will conquer all!”
With these words, he pulled the trigger again.

Another empty chamber. Callan remained unharmed.
“Lila, just one shot left,” Callan looked at Lila with deep emotion. “I love you. May the goddess of love protect me.”
Then Callan fired the third shot.
BANG-
The bullet discharged. Blood splattered everywhere. Callan had betrayed love, and naturally, the goddess of love didn’t protect him.
Looking at Callan’s body lying in a pool of blood, Lila’s eyes unexpectedly grew moist.
After all, they had loved each other once, loved so passionately. Now, faced with this final separation by death, how
could she remain unmoved?
“Callan, this time it’s truly goodbye.” Lila retrieved the handcuff key from Callan’s body, unlocked the cuffs, and walked away with determined steps.
Now she was truly free.
She would keep her promise from earlier–she would live well.
Afterward, Lila returned to the maritime research facility and dedicated her life to scientific research, never
marrying again.
Love had no solution for her. She didn’t want to waste her life on the ephemeral illusion of romance anymore. After all, beyond love, her life still had science and a future waiting for her.
