Chapter 6
My hand trembled so violently I nearly collapsed on the spot.
The hospital corridor was bone–chillingly cold.
I stood there, feeling like an empty shell someone had sucked the soul from.
Meg looked at me with undisguised disgust. “What has our family ever done to you? Nate never
cheated. Now you can’t even tolerate an innocent baby? You’re toxic.”
I stared at the floor, silent.
Nate finally reappeared. “The doctor says the baby’s out of danger.”
I looked up at him, desperate to clear my name. “I didn’t do it on purpose. I had no idea-”
He cut me off immediately, unwilling to listen.
His eyes held the cold judgment of a stranger. “Sienna, I don’t even recognize you anymore. This is…
cruel.”
I clutched the papers in my hand, my heart feeling like it was being crushed under an impossible weight. Finally, with a trembling voice, I handed them to him.
“Fine. I’ll give you your perfect family, Nate. Let’s… let’s get divorced.”
He froze, his expression darkening, but he said nothing.
I couldn’t bear to look at him another second, afraid I’d completely break down.
“Nate.” Paige appeared weakly in the doorway of the hospital room, unsteady on her feet.
“Sienna,” she said, her voice frail but accusing, “if you’re angry, take it out on me. Why hurt my
baby?”
The bystanders–family members of other patients and nurses–all turned to stare, whispering among themselves.
“Is that the woman who gave the baby an allergic reaction?”

Chapter 6
“She looks so put–together. How could she do something like that?”
I opened my mouth, but no sound came out.
Nate rushed over to support Paige, protective arms around her, his face etched with concern. “You
need to rest.”
He looked back at me, his eyes cold as steel. “Sienna, come apologize to Paige! Or else-”
I shoved the crumpled papers into his hand. “Or else WHAT? This? Isn’t this what you want?”
He glanced down, his lips pressed into a tight line, but he took them anyway.
“Jealousy has made you irrational. Some time apart might help you cool down and think clearly.”
I laughed, even as tears spilled down my cheeks.
“Since you’ve already made up your mind, don’t bother asking for my side.”
I turned and walked away, each step unsteady, as if I were walking on the edge of a knife.
I thought things would end like this. But I never imagined Nate wouldn’t let go of me.
At two in the morning, my door was violently kicked open.
Before I could even react, someone yanked me roughly out of bed.
Nate stood there, his eyes bloodshot, his grip on my shoulders so tight I thought the bones might shatter. “Sienna, what kind of sick monster have you turned into?!”
“What the HELL is wrong with you-” I gasped, trying to pull away from his crushing grip.
“Wrong with ME?!”
His palm connected with my cheek in a stinging slap that made my vision blur. “LOOK AT WHAT
YOU’VE FUCKING DONE!”
He dragged me to the passenger seat of his car, not even giving me time to change out of my pajamas. We sped toward the hospital, tires screeching against the asphalt.
The hospital corridor lights were harsh and unforgiving. Nurses hurried back and forth, each one staring at me like I was something that had crawled out from under a rock.

Chapter 6
“Are you HAPPY now?!”
Nate roughly forced me to my knees, his voice a guttural snarl that barely sounded human.
“Paige slit her wrists and left a suicide note. She wrote that you threatened to DESTROY her if she
didn’t kill herself. That you’d make sure her baby lived a life of rejection and torture.”
His eyes were wild with rage, his voice torn from his throat: “But she said she doesn’t blame
Just begged that you’d treat her son well after she was GONE.”
My brain exploded with white noise.
you.
“I didn’t do it!” I screamed, tears streaming down my face. “Nate, I swear to God I never did any of that! Why won’t you believe me?!”
“She tried to kill herself and you’re still lying to my face?!”
He roared, slamming his fist into the wall with such force that blood immediately began streaming
from his knuckles. “You’re nothing but poison. If she dies, I swear to God I’ll make you pay for every drop of her blood!”
