Chapter 5
I knew Nate would probably never marry Paige.
But he would, time and again, be pulled in by her neediness, letting her disrupt the rhythm of our
life together.
If I didn’t file for divorce, how long could I endure this? Three months? Three years? A lifetime?
I contacted a lawyer to draft divorce papers.
When I woke next, my phone was ringing incessantly.
“SIENNA!” Nate’s voice roared through the speaker. “If you have a problem, take it up with ME!”
Before I could even respond, he continued, his fury palpable. “Why the HELL would you send those
emails reporting Paige for genetic theft? Her postpartum depression is already severe! Are you trying to drive her to suicide?”
I froze.
I had never sent any emails.
But he didn’t ask–he just convicted me on the spot.
This was the first time he’d ever blown up at me like this.
“Sienna, the doctors say her postpartum mental state is incredibly fragile. Last night, if they hadn’t caught it in time, she would have killed herself! We’re talking about a human life here–can’t you show an ounce of compassion?!”
“Believe it or not, I didn’t do it. I wouldn’t stoop to something that petty.” My voice sounded hollow even to myself.
“Sienna, please. When she’s discharged, just come see her. Apologize. Do it for me, if nothing else. She needs closure to move past this psychological burden…”
The man on the phone was crying now, his voice breaking.
I wiped away my own tears that had fallen silently, and finally nodded though he couldn’t see me.

“Fine.”
Apology? Definitely no. But we surely need to meet to end our absurd relationship.
I arrived at the hospital as promised.
Nate saw me and nodded slightly. “Sienna, thank you for coming.”
When Paige spotted me, she instantly became agitated, her eyes immediately welling up as she struggled to get out of bed.
“Sienna, please don’t report me,” she begged, her voice cracking. “I can’t lose my baby. Just give us a little more time, please…”
As she spoke, she started to sink to her knees in front of me.
The nurse rushed to stop her: “You just had a C–section! You can’t kneel!”
Meg, Nate’s sister, quickly helped her up, shooting me an accusatory glare. “Sienna, when did you
become so heartless?”
People around us stared. I just stood there, having done nothing, yet somehow transformed into the cold–blooded villain holding a grudge.
Thankfully, Nate still had some awareness of how this scene must look.
“Let’s all calm down,” he said, placing a hand on my back to guide me a few steps closer. “Paige,
Sienna didn’t send those emails. She came here to clear things up, not to upset you.”
Meg, apparently deciding to ease the tension, carefully lifted the baby from Paige’s arms.
“Sienna, why don’t you hold him? He’s been so good today.”
Before I could agree or refuse, the infant was placed in my arms.
He was genuinely soft and sweet, his tiny face peaceful.
My heart melted just a little. For a brief moment, I wondered what might have been if things had gone differently for us.
But within seconds, the baby in my arms began to squirm, then let out a series of piercing wails.

“What’s wrong?” I asked, alarmed.
Paige’s expression changed instantly. “Oh my god, he’s breaking out in a rash. It must be another allergic reaction! The nurse said he’s allergic to perfume.”
“Hey, don’t look at me,” Meg quickly defended herself. “I haven’t worn perfume in weeks.”
All eyes turned to me.
Nate glanced down at the increasingly distressed baby, his expression hardening. “Sienna, are you wearing perfume?”
Before I could even respond, the baby’s cries grew more shrill, his face rapidly covering with tiny
red welts.
“We need a doctor!” Paige shouted desperately, trying to get out of bed despite her surgical wounds.
Nate snatched the baby from my arms and rushed toward the door, calling for medical help.
As he passed me, he muttered just loud enough for me to hear: “You’re not even his stepmom yet and
you’re already playing dirty. I’ve never been so disappointed in you!”
