Sonia was furious. She hadn’t done anything wrong–why were they canceling on her? Didn’t they realize how much time and effort she’d invested in this collaboration?
As if reading her mind. Miss Brooks said, “Ms. Vinci, I saw what happened earlier. You deliberately stepped on Ms. Anastasia’s hand. You also deliberately tried to smear her reputation. If you two have some kind of feud, she handled it far more professionally than you did. She didn’t say a single negative word about you, but you’ve been badmouthing her this entire time.”
Sonia felt sick to her stomach, but she couldn’t come up with a rebuttal.
The truth was, she had done it on purpose.
She just hadn’t expected the sharp eyed Miss Brooks to catch her.
Were all businesspeople this perceptive?
Sonia wanted to say something in her defense, but the words wouldn’t come.
“Hey, what’s this?” Olivia suddenly noticed a piece of paper on the floor. She picked it up and paused, studying it. “This must belong to that lady, Ana When we were stuck in the elevator, she used these papers to fan me. It really helped me feel better.”
Miss Brooks froze.
If anyone else had said this, Miss Brooks might not have believed it. But coming from her own daughter Olivia, she trusted it completely.
So those wrinkles she’d been so critical of–they weren’t because Ana was careless or disrespectful. They were because she’d used the papers to help save Olivia?
But why hadn’t Ana explained that?
“Wow, Mom, could something this beautiful actually exist?” Olivia’s eyes lit up as she looked at Ana’s design sketches.
“If there really was a necklace like this, I’d love to have one.”
Miss Brooks took the paper from Olivia and studied it carefully, a complex mix of emotions flickering in her eyes.
“Mom?”
“I’m fine. Let’s go,” Miss Brooks said to Olivia.
Sonia wasn’t ready to give up. “Miss Olivia, you’ve never really spent time with me. Isn’t it unfair to dismiss all my hard work based on one brief encounter? Can’t you give me just one chance?”
Olivia frowned with displeasure. “You’re right, I used to really admire you. But like I already told you, distance creates illusions. Now that I’ve met you in person, the spell is broken. You’re not as amazing as I thought you were.”
Olivia paused, as if she had more to say.
