Chapter 5
“If I hadn’t come, I wouldn’t have heard how everyone trashed me,” I snapped. “When did you see me go upstairs with a guy? Where was it? What did he look like?”
Aidan was lost for words.
Back when I got harassed at the bar, he told me to suck it up. By the time I stumbled home drunk at dawn, he was fast asleep.
I swallowed my pride to pay his debts. In return, he smeared me like that just to dump me.

“You’re disgusting!” I spat. “I drank myself sick to clear your debts. My stomach never recovers.”
Turning to the others, I continued, “You say I sold myself. Did you see it or hear it from under the bed? Do you even hear the poison coming out of your mouths?”
Isabella stood up. “It’s my fault. I shouldn’t have brought it up.”
“Pair of snakes!” I spat.
Aidan shot up, furious. “I saw you go upstairs with him. I followed, worried I got it wrong, but then I heard you moaning. Every time I think about you with all those guys, I want to
puke.”
I trembled with rage, but no explanation would fix this. A lie repeated became the truth.
I grabbed a bottle and smashed it. Isabella yelped, shielding Aidan.
I walked out with a broken heart.
In the raging storm, I wandered down the street like a lost soul. I was soaked through,
unable to tell tears from the rain.
I looked up at the sky, feeling that God was crying for me.

Suddenly, a black umbrella appeared over me. I glanced at the man holding it and froze.
“You alright?” His suit got wet as the umbrella tilted toward me.
“Thanks.” I blinked.
I didn’t accept his help. I just ran into the rain.
The downpour gave me a fever, but I stayed in a hotel, refusing to go home.
Aidan texted me, but I ignored him.
Sophie called me to the hospital. She was in gynecology.
The doctor said years of abortions and neglect had ruined her body. I tried to ask about treatment, but she bolted.
I chased after her but bumped into Aidan and Isabella in the hallway.
Isabella was holding a pregnancy test. She was expecting.
Aidan was shocked, then sneered.
I brushed past them to chase Sophie, who climbed to the roof.
I begged her to come down. “There’s still hope. Dump that guy. I’ll stick by you.”
Sophie raised her phone, broken. “He never planned to marry me. Said girls like me are fun but too dirty for a wife.”
I stepped closer, trying to get her down, but she jumped.
Screams echoed below. Her body lay twisted on the ground, and her blood was pooling.
I collapsed onto the ground, helpless.
A timed message reached my phone.
Sophie: [Lorelei, don’t waste your life on a man like I did.]

I wailed.

In the elevator, I ran into Aidan and Isabella again. Isabella had finished her checkups.
People gossiped about Sophie’s death, and someone asked Aidan, “You two newlyweds? You look perfect together.”
Isabella shyly glanced at him, while I stood in the corner, numb.
“Yeah, she’s pregnant,” he replied. “Gotta take care of her.”
Someone else muttered, “That girl who jumped is so young, doing that kind of work. Got sick and couldn’t handle it. Should’ve just married and stayed clean.”
I slammed my fist against the elevator wall. The loud noise silenced everyone.
After handling Sophie’s affairs, I went home and packed my few belongings. Then I texted Aidan, telling him that we were done. He didn’t reply.
I snapped my SIM card, tossed it in the trash, and left without looking back.
All I had in my account was 100 thousand dollars. All these years, I never cared about
money or ever asked Aidan for any.
A man spending money on a woman didn’t necessarily mean he loved her, but if he didn’t love her, he’d never spend a dime. That was for sure.
