“I’m just… too shocked,” Leon said. Anyone would be curious, especially with something this important.
He couldn’t believe Jessica meant it.
He couldn’t believe Jessica was serious. He trusted her too much to think she’d really let it go. She wasn’t the type to drop an investigation so easily. Most people could never do that.
“Would you ever do anything to hurt the country or its people?” Jessica suddenly asked.
Leon shook his head. Sweat beaded on his temples as his face turned pale.
The drug was taking effect, wracking his body with pain. In moments, his skin was burning hot.
Even through the pain, he held on, gripping Jessica’s hand. His eyes stayed fixed on her face.
“If you don’t want me looking into it, I won’t, as long as you don’t hurt the people. I’ll give you time to figure things out yourself.”
She squeezed his hand with a knowing smile and added, “Should’ve let you eat something first, though. Now you’ll probably be out cold all day on an empty stomach.” But her light–hearted remark did nothing to ease the tension in his face.
His gaze remained fixed on her. Even as his eyes dimmed, they still carried a mix of frustration and something undeniably touching.
“Shh, don’t speak. I already know what you want to say,” Jessica whispered.
She smiled, a kind of tenderness Leon had never seen in her before.
“I hate misunderstandings, and I can’t stand needless suffering. I trust you, so I’ll trust you all the way. If you can handle this yourself, the Royal Guard won’t get involved unless they hurt anyone or threaten the royal family again,” she added.
So there were conditions. Leon knew she had weighed the pros and cons.
Leon finally closed his eyes. Before losing consciousness, he rasped, “Having you, Jessica, I have no regrets in this life.”
Though his voice was barely above a whisper, Jessica caught every single word.

Over an hour later, Garbisch returned from the palace/Jessica tucked Leon in again before leaving the room.
Seeing Monica in the courtyard, Garbisch felt a bad feeling creeping in.
Jessica came out, and he hurried over and whispered, “Jessica, inside-”
“His Highness was poisoned. I’m having him recover here,” Jessica said softly, cutting him off
Garbisch had more questions on his mind, but ultimately, he kept them to himself.
He would be thrilled if Jessica and Leon could make it to the altar. He held Leon in the highest regard, and in fact, he practically idolized him.

Jessica didn’t look surprised, like she had seen it coming.
Garbisch glanced at the bedroom door again. The questions lingered in his mind, but since Jessica didn’t bring them up, he saw no point in asking.
“So, Jessica,” he said softly, “how should we explain this to the King? Just tell me what to do.”
She couldn’t help but chuckle. “Garbisch, aren’t you supposed to be the King’s most loyal aide? That sounds a little treasonous, don’t you think?”
